Happy Juneteenth!

On Juneteenth, we honor freedom and the brilliance that’s always been in our DNA. When I wrote My People Are Innovative: A Story About Black Inventors, I wanted to give Black children something many of us didn’t grow up with: stories that reflect our legacy of invention, creativity, and perseverance.

The Black inventors featured in this book were visionaries, problem solvers, and trailblazers. They looked at the world around them and found ways to improve it. Their contributions are woven into the fabric of our daily lives. Inventions such as the traffic light, ironing board, and mailbox have enhanced our lives in numerous ways. Black inventors didn’t wait for permission to solve problems or shape history, and that same legacy lives on in us.

In Just Be You, Sister Girl, my guided journal created for Black women, I help women find their voice again, reclaim their narratives, and embrace their true selves. There's no need to diminish yourself to belong anywhere. You don't require credentials to be influential. Your voice, your story, and your vision are all important.

This Juneteenth, I’m weaving generations together by uplifting the stories of inventors, dreamers, and doers. I am inviting you to do the same. Whether you’re raising a little innovator or nurturing your own growth, these books speak to you.

Let’s celebrate Black excellence, past, present, and future. Our history didn't start with struggle. It started with brilliance!
